CHARACTER NAME: Derek Hale
SERIES: Teen Wolf - Derek’s wiki page.
CANON POINT: 3x04 [Updated to 3x12]
AGE: Mid-twenties.
APPEARANCE: Here

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY: By the time the series reaches season two, Derek Hale certainly undergoes a bit of a personality change.

During season one he’s portrayed as a bit of a, well, lone wolf. It’s clear that he carries a great deal of guilt following the Hale fire, believing that he was responsible for the entire ordeal but unable to bring himself to admit his involvement to other family members. Something which is directly addressed by Kate.

Speaking of Kate. It’s also clear that her manipulation of Derek and betrayal of his trust left a severe dent in Derek’s ability to trust. Throughout the season Derek only gives out information when absolutely necessary, if there’s literally no other choice, and even then he does actively try to steer conversations away from the fact that he knows more than he lets on.
The only time when Derek does seem to allow some leeway on the trust matter is when it would directly affect the outcome of his life.

Leading on from his lack of trust is his additionally dented idea of self-worth. He doesn’t believe that he’s worth saving for the sake of being saved; he goes out of his way to point out that he’s still needed for a purpose. Which seems to be a theme, he doesn’t seem to believe that anyone would want him around for company but, someone will want him around if he has something to offer.
It could be said that this mentality links into Derek’s theme of the season which involves his basic focus on trying to stay alive at any cost.

In comparison season two Derek’s theme is all about power and building a pack. With great power, comes a renewed confidence.

It’s clear earlier on that the power has gone slightly to Derek’s head. He’s no longer struggling to survive and his personality changes in response to that point. He’s comes across as more confident, bordering on cocky at times, and has that stereotypical smug attitude at times, particular at the beginning of the season when things are actually looking up for him.

He makes far more sarcastic remarks and throws around a great deal more dry wit than in the previous season, normally aimed at Scott in an almost passive aggressive manner at times. That said, and still on the subject of Scott, Derek does acknowledge that the other werewolf is coming into his own and leading his own pack.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that his previous problems have disappeared. He still clearly has a problem with trusting others and withholding information as well as showing signs that he generally doesn’t seem familiar with interacting with normal, or previously normal, individuals.

Starting off with the trust issue, it’s clear that once again Derek is keeping details to himself until he has no other option. He does this with the Kanima, already knowing who it was and actually knowing what the creature actually was. This leads to a fair amount of tension, namely with Scott, when the two attempt to work together.
That said, in regards to his pack, there’s an almost warped sense of trust between them, Erica being a notable example who directly stated that she needed to be taken to Derek following a seizure. However, by the end of the season Erica and Boyd take off in search of another pack and Isaac seems to be leaning more towards Scott.
It could almost be said that a large amount of this pack’s trust was simply based on the fact that Derek improved their lives. That he seemed to know what he was doing. When he ends up being as lost as them, the trust and loyalty started to crumble under pressure.

Speaking of turning, it becomes clear at the end of the season that Derek didn’t pick people out at random and that he actually had a plan of sorts in order to gain a pack as quickly as possible. Namely he reached out to three vulnerable teenagers and promised them something that they desperately wanted, he manipulated them.
To further his manipulative behaviour, Derek straight-up seduces Erica into the pack and later flirts with a police officer in order to pose as a distraction. It could be said that this season shows a deeper extent to the damage Kate did to him, it’s a matter of him copying her technique and using either his looks or words to get what he wants in the end.

Leading on from that, Derek in this season has a very violent thought process. His solution to most problems seems to be to kill whatever is causing said problem, when trying to teach his Betas he pushes them to the point of collapsing and then injures them for complaining.
He’d rather go for the offensive approach whereas previously, in season one, he was far more defensive.

It should be clear by this point that Derek in general doesn’t seem to understand how people actually communicate. All of the other werewolves were turned; he was born into the life. As such, he’s not very good at explaining certain details, things that were presumably instinctively learnt on his end, and he tends to be too much at times. Too rough. Too harsh.
This could come down to the fact that while he has an Alpha status, he has no idea how to be an actual Alpha. He feels the need to throw his weight around because he doesn’t know how to go about staying in control. As is pointed out at one point, he thinks he’s a better Alpha than he actually is, his lack of trust and ability to connect with those around him prevent him from becoming that Alpha.

That said. This season does show a contrast which was only briefly glimpsed in the first season, namely Derek’s protective nature. On several different occasions he even puts his own life on the line to prevent the deaths of those around him. He sends Boyd back to the car when it’s clear that he can no longer fight, and he goes out of his way to find and save Scott from a wolfsbane vaporiser.

This trust does extend into Season 3 to a degree, with Derek actually being somewhat willing to work with others. At least, once they catch on and essentially make themselves a part of the action. It's still seemingly beyond his capabilities to actually fill people in right from the start.

Likewise, the protective aspect is also present only, in a slightly darker way.

From the first few episodes it's clear that Derek is facing a breaking point of sorts, notably burdened by the guilt of Erica's death, and his mentality starts to lean towards one of self-sacrifice. He throws himself into situations to prevent others from doing so; he goes so far as to forcibly push Isaac away in hopes that it will prevent another death.

He’s still stubborn as anything but, at least his heart is in the somewhat right place. Even if his execution could use some work.

ABILITIES: Starting with the werewolf basics.
  • A werewolf possesses enhanced human abilities.
  • Senses are heightened. Sight, smell, hearing. A werewolf can detect a lie by listening to a heartbeat.
  • Strength, Speed and Agility are enhanced beyond human capabilities. Reaction times are additionally cut down.
  • Healing abilities advance a great deal. A werewolf can heal from most injuries at a rapidly increased rate including broken bones.
  • A werewolf is also capable of taking pain from another living being.
  • Werewolves are all around stronger in packs. An Alpha needs three Betas to form a basic pack.
  • An Alpha possesses the ability to turn others through a bite.
Season 3 noted a few new abilities that Alpha’s were capable of.
An Alpha can apparently see an old wound. Such as a faded tattoo.
Their eye sight is also confirmed to be capable of night-vision.

With every strength comes a weakness though.
  • Wolfsbane is exceptionally dangerous to a werewolf. The effects of the plant have so far been varied. It has notably caused a lack of control over shifting while weakening the victim.
  • It has been mentioned that if the wolfsbane reaches a werewolf's heart that it will kill them.
  • Mountain Ash is a less deadly weakness and exhibits barrier-like abilities. A supernatural creature, like a werewolf, cannot cross this barrier.
  • The Full Moon is obviously linked to werewolves. It takes a great deal of control for a werewolf to remain 'sane' during a full moon. A lack of control can lead to a werewolf lashing out in an attempt to kill everything and anything with a pulse.

POSSESSIONS:
  • Clothes on his back, shown in the appearance picture.
  • small amount of cash.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE: Both samples are from previous game apps.

[He’s heard the explanation from the hospital, as rushed as it was, about the strange city set-up with its ruling Gods. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that he’s probably going to be stranded in this unknown place for a while. Forced to act as a game piece, to some sort of ruling force. Without a single idea hint as to how he can escape.

And, oddly enough, he’s not going to question it. This one time. Impossible things have already been happening left and right in his life as it is. A powerful supernatural entity kidnapping people? Terrible luck but, at this point in time, it’s not exactly an out of nowhere surprise.
There's just one small factor that he needs to know. One little point that no one felt the need to explain.
]

How does time work in a place like this?

[A little too out of the blue? Perhaps. He’s not here to make friends with the kidnap victims who seem to have settled down in the area. He’d just like to know what the odds are of him actually having a place to return to.]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Of course things couldn’t go his way for once, one small victory and then another, larger problem turns up. It would be far too simple for a stroke of good luck to come into his life by this point.

They had stopped Peter, and Jackson turned into an overgrown snake creature. Jackson became a full werewolf, and an Alpha pack finally arrives in town.

And where was he now? Stuck somewhere far from Beacon Hills, far from what remained of his pack, due to potentially supernatural forces. If he thought about it his current situation was more likely than not due to said supernatural forces. There was simply no other explanation for arriving in an entirely new place without any recollection of being moved. To say nothing of that fact that he’d never seen this place mentioned on a map.

Letting out frustrated sigh, Derek glanced around at his current surroundings. Slowly turning the strange device he’d been given over in his hand. There was very little he could do at this point, his options were extremely limited given the unfamiliar area.

He knew next to nothing about the city he was currently in, other than it was populated. Some of the nearby heartbeats sounded a little off, slight differences in the pattern that seemed a little too altered to belong to a human.

For all he knew there were still supernatural forces at work, perhaps walking the streets along with him, and he currently had no clue as to how they would alter the situation.

The werewolf turned his head skywards; his face immediately falling into a frown, the sky was different here. Very noticeably different, and that presented a more immediate problem than simply figuring out where he was and how to get back. He was currently stuck in a place that seemed to have several moons.

Derek might have had pride in his control when it came to a full moon but, that admittedly was just one full moon. Being in an unfamiliar setting where there would eventually be several, presumably in a row? That was going to be rough, to put it mildly.

He needed answers. He seemingly needed a new pack temporary pack now. And he needed the stability that a pack could offer as quickly as possible, or at least something to focus on other than his own inevitable desire to shift.

"This is going to be rough."
