[It isn't like he's had a solid meal in a while. But he's the one who asked for training, so he needs to just suck it up. He moves over to the smaller log and picks it up--it's heavy, but not enough that he's going to start trembling from it immediately.]
[ No one has had a solid meal in a while. And when you’re a werewolf who typically consumes more than a standard human on an average day? The sudden lack of food hits hard. So he can relate to what Stiles is going through, but he does need this practice. Just on the off-chance that things hit the ‘worst case scenario’ point. ]
[Stiles snaps back, shifting the log so he's holding it in one hand like Derek told him, trying his best not to get snappy and irritated. It isn't Derek's fault.]
[ Faced with an attitude like that, it’s hardly a surprise that Derek snaps right back. He’s doing this voluntarily, there’s nothing stopping him from cancelling the training. ]
Go right ahead. You can find someone else to train you if you’re going to act like that.
I can't. You know as well as I do that we're running out of time, I can't afford to 'cut you some slack'.
[ He doesn't sound as snappy with that response, there's definitely a frustrated edge to his tone though. ]
Step a little closer and then swing it. [ Time for the lesson explanation. ] If something comes after you and your main weapons are missing, you’ll need to pick up the first thing you come across. You need to be capable of maintaining your balance whilst throwing a large weight around.
I got that, but I'm trying! So I'm just saying if I snap a bit don't rip my throat out.
[Stiles sighs and steps in closer, trying to adjust the log, muttering.]
This seems a disaster in the making.
[But still he swings. The first one definitely sends him off balance, and he has to take a few stumbling steps to regain his footing. Luckily he doesn't fall, or drop the log.]
[ Just rolling his eyes right now. Sorry Stiles, but now isn't the time for 'going easy'. Step up and act like you're giving it your all, none of this pausing to complain stuff. ]
I'll catch you if you start to fall over.
[ And true to his word he does move behind Stiles when he stumbles. ]
Try again. And tell me if your ankles start to hurt.
[ So he can stop this before a sprained ankle incident occurs. ]
[Stiles is trying to not get frustrated. He's hungry, tired, and this was a horrible idea, but he's started it, so he needs to finish it. So Stiles moves to swing the log again, doing better this time, at least. He is going to be exhausted after this, though.]
[ It's not exactly a walk in the park for Derek either, but it's a necessary form of training. It's not as though a giant supply of food will suddenly drop into their laps, they need to get used to running on 'empty'. ]
Better. Try this, start with the log on the ground and sweep it upwards. Follow the weight around in a circle.
[All of this makes him feel like an idiot. A genuine idiot. Like a piss-poor lumberjack who has had one too many drinks. But still, this is him trying what Derek said, and managing not to fall over or accidentally smack himself. He's breathing hard by the end, but he's managing.]
[ These are skills that may come in handy at a later date, it’s teaching ‘crowd control’ skills, nothing terrible or stupid about something like that. For the sake of a little ego boosting though, it’s less drunk lumberjack, and more ‘guy with a two handed axe’.
The werewolf carefully puts a hand under Stiles’ arms, holding them up a little and adjusting the way that their movement flows. ]
Relax a little. The idea is that you allow yourself to be dragged, if you’re putting force into it to keep it swinging, you’re doing unnecessary work.
[ There's that urge to make a snappy comment again. It's not as though he's going out of his way to make Stiles do a stupid, meaningless task.
Nevertheless he nods and moves to pick up the other log, slowly dragging it away a couple of steps for safety sake. After a brief moment to adjust his, unnecessary, two-handed grip he goes through the motions. Drags the log along, then starts to lift it up, follows the natural swing round and then drops back down to a drag. ]
[It actually helps, to see Derek do it, despite the werewolf acting like it was a fucking pain in the ass. Stiles readjusts his hold again, and follows the motion like Derek did, and this time, he does it right.]
[ Still tempting to enforce an attitude adjustment but he does have to admit that Stiles has improved since seeing the action. The werewolf realises a sigh before giving the teenager a nod of agreement, that’s as close to praise as he’s going to get right now. ]
[Stiles does it once, twice, three more times before moving to rest the log on the ground, breathing hard. Man, this whole 'no food' is really messing with his stamina. It's frustration, to say the least.]
[ Now that he's actually seen Stiles do the action a couple of times, and taking into account the heavy breathing, the werewolf nods. Pushing himself is one thing, pushing a human running on empty? Not the smartest idea. ]

Yeah well... [He gestures to the other log still on the ground.]
Could you show me what you mean? I'm better at visual.

After this lesson, I'm going to try and find us some food. We both need it.

I’ll join you. Right now it’s safer if we move together.

[He snorts, shaking his head, glancing up at Derek.]
Sounds good to me.

[ Dynamic is certainly one word for it. ]
I might be able to pinpoint a source of food if we get close enough to one. Don't count on it though.

[Still, he lets out a breath, and moves to stand again.]
Break is over.
[Really, he probably had more minutes, but if he stays sitting for any longer he's going to fall asleep.]
