[ Just slowly raises an eyebrow at the word ‘ninja’. Come on now, this sort of entrance isn’t new. He used to do it all the time, it should have been expected.
That said he’s not going to call Stiles out on it. ]
How do you think?
[ He doesn’t wait for answer before pulling out a few strips of ripped material from one of his pockets. Closely followed by a handful of nails from another. ]
I'm going to drop these, and you're going to tell me which direction the sound came from.
[ If it’s some sort of sexual innuendo, it’s definitely better left unsaid. Derek’s aware of how the set-up looks, but given the resources in the city it’s the best he can do.
He waves the strips of material as though they’re the obvious answer to the question. Which they kind of are. ]
[ Rolling his eyes so hard, you don't even know. This is the level of maturity this lesson has sunk to?
He bites back an incredibly an insulting remark as moves to blindfold Stiles. ]
Don't sound so happy about it.
[ Okay, maybe he tightens the thing a little too tightly and really yanks on the ends to tie the material. It’s his way of venting. Returning an immature action for an immature comment. ]
[Well, at least he can't see, now. Still, Stiles flexes his hands, just trying to center himself. There is a flash of panic for a moment, but he quells it quickly enough, instead, just listening.]
[ He doesn’t move right away, instead he just hovers nearby until Stiles is calm. ]
Good. Now remember, you need to focus.
[ There’s an unspoken ‘to the best of your ability’ line tacked on at the end. Derek’s aware of the focusing issue, but he’s also seen the teenager be oddly focused at times. It’s a matter of finding a temporary balance between the two states.
He settles into his new-found standing spot before starting to drop the nails. To the left, to start off simple. ]
[ No such thing as 'correct' here. It's either good, bad or nearly. Silently he moves to another position and starts once again, standing a little further back this time. Behind him. ]
[Stiles wants to turn around, but he won't. Because he doesn't want to get disoriented. He also knows that this is going to get harder, so he needs to try and just be one point on the compass.]
[ Instead of responding again, Derek took another step back and paused. It was clear that Stiles could get the basic directions down and he could pinpoint a small sound within a relatively silent room.
That was one thing. Narrowing down a sound in an everyday situation was a little more complicated than that. ]
I want you to tell me the direction of the third nail this time.
[ One thrown around Stiles to clatter in front of him. A second tossed to the left. The third thrown behind and to the right. Before a fourth and fifth were thrown together to the front-left. ]
[Stiles frowns for a moment, and counts by tapping his fingers against his thigh. It's like playing a weird game of simon, isn't it? Just focus for a little while; come on Stiles.]
Uh--behind...right?
[He stopped listening after the third one was thrown, so hopefully he won't be asked to name the others.]
[ As pointless as the action is, Derek ends up nodding before he can really think the action through. ]
Good.
[ He starts moving to pick up the nails. Keeping quiet for the most part but occasionally stomping just to see whether Stiles will react to the sound or not. ]
[ Once again he starts going around and picking up the nails. Isn't this initial practice riveting? ]
You okay to keep going?
[ Attention-span obstacles in mind, he's willing to deviate from his usual training method. Keeping things short and frequent instead of marathon sessions every now and then. ]
[ Take away one sense and essentially train the others to adapt. Lose one’s sight; rely more on hearing and, in most cases, touch. ]
Make the most of it, this is the easy part.
[ Eventually they’d need to move onto planned scenarios, something in public with a lot of distractions. That was for another day though. He throws six nails and loudly walks whilst doing so. Two to the back, a third to the front-left, a fourth and fifth to the right, and the last one back to the front -left. ]
Fourth nail.

[ Derek shakes his head, regardless of the fact that the action can’t be seen. ]
Bad. Try again.
[ Once again he goes through the motions. Despite initially considering the idea of hints, he doesn’t want to lead the training too much. Which is why he doesn’t mention the nail number that Stiles did identify. ]

[He puts up a hand.]
But I get it, I get it. Be aware of all surroundings. [He tries to be, but not always easy when he gets distracted.]
Okay. So--hearing. How do I uh...train with that.

Okay, but shouldn't you blindfold me, first?

Unless I can trust you to keep your eyes shut.

I don't trust myself to keep my eyes shut. So come on, tie me up!
[Okay he almost made it.]

[Really, he is. This isn't easy for him; again he misses his damn drugs.
But still, he lets out a breath and listens, chewing on his bottom lip.]
Left.

How many went landed in front of you?

[Stiles is probably wrong. And he does flinch at the stomps, but it's minor.]
no subject
Good.
[ Once again he tosses the five nails, each one going to the same place as before. This time though he's loudly walking whilst throwing. ]
Fourth nail.

[Stiles tries to think through it.]
To my left? Or--or no, front? front.
no subject
[ At least he's kind enough to repeat the nail throwing process for the second try. ]

[Does that work? He doesn't sound entirely sure.]

[He's doing okay. He feels a little tension in his shoulders, but somehow--]
It sound stupid, but the blindfold is actually helping me focus.
Maybe because I can't see.
[Takes out one of his senses.]
